Tribute to a Legend. Henry Edward Roberts

My tribute to Henry Edward Roberts, well known as Father of Personal Computer. Henry Ed Roberts created MITS(Micro Instrumentation and telemetry systems) Altair 8800 which used Intel 8080 processor. This legendary invention motivated Bill Gates and Paul Allen to develop a software for Altair, which was called as Altair Basic and that was Microsoft's first product. Rest all is history!

Roberts sold MITS in 1977 and retired to Georgia,US where he farmed, studied medicine and eventually became a small-town doctor. He passed away on April 1, 2010 with a serious pneumonia. May his soul RIP.

Heated debates on rising mercury levels are already on. By the mid-march temperature has crossed 40 degree limit in many parts of Kerala. Hearing the news of Sun-burns and associated difficulties, i would like to share my thoughts on why we are facing all this!

Kerala is(was?)bestowed with a pleasant climate and lot of pure water sources. As someone said Nature can provide everything for a man's need, but not greed! Kerala is known all over the world as "God's own country". Is it just because of the temples/churches spread across this small state? Definitely not! This land has been blessed so much in various ways. Compared to other states in India, Kerala too lies near to the Equator. But this land lies near to Sea and has got a protection sheath by Western ghats. These all factors have been contributing very much in maintaining a great climate through all the season. Without the majestic Western Ghats, Kerala would have been a dry land by the dry winds blowing from North India. But Keralites exploited this boon and started suffering from various climate change related issues. Now It's better to call this place as "Mafia's own country". There is Mafia for everything. Land mafia, Sand mafia, Tourism mafia and many more. Some equipments like JCB, Tipper Lorrys etc became the "state-sign" as well. Fill paddy fields, demolish hills, Cut trees and do whatever you like..But get the support of Mafia, you are safe here!
Demolition of natural resources is accounting to what we are facing now in the form of drought, high temperature and even change in seasonal things. Kerala is having the largest number of wells in the whole world. With the rising number of flats across this state, Ground water usage too increased from the normal level in the form of Bore wells. No one is really concerned about all these. Taking ground water is like withdrawing money from a savings account, and not crediting anything to it. Eventually water level will decrease and we have to find any other solution for drinking water. Many says we can go for desalination plants then as like many gulf countries. But we must remember that there was no supply of fresh water there and that was their only option. And being an arid region there is no such wide options left for them. Kerala in turn is blessed with two major monsoon and lot of rivers. The truth is we are not cared about our resources and we really don't know water management. We can really recharge ground water supply by using some simple methods like Rain water harvesting. Just don't allow the rain water to get away from our courtyard or surroundings. Government can do a major role in minimizing the extensive filling of paddy fields. They are the major suppliers of fresh water to wells and ponds. Once they are filled and used for construction purposes, water will not get absorbed and will get away after deluging the area for a while.

If we continue to deplete our precious natural resources, we don't even have the right to cry in future. Don't say that we love our children..Because we are leaving a world filled with polluted air, water and plastic wastes to them. Those who cut trees must think about their children and their future. We can dream of many things. But fresh air, fresh water and good climate is needed for any human being for survival. Preference must be given to preserve our Mother Earth than exploring life possibilities in another cold dark planets.

A big sensation of this week. Its all about Buzz. This new tool from Google labs has been just rocking. Personally being an ardent Google fan, i can't hide this anymore..I just love BUZZ. Since it's incorporated with Gmail, there is no need to sign-in to another site. I strongly believe, Twitter gonna be hit hard with Buzz. Here is my latest cartoon on the same..

PS:Google Buzz was known as "taco town" during test phase. I heard its nothing about any big city or anything, it is an ode to good-tasting greasy food :)

Another great loss for Malayalam film industry. Ill-fate just continues... This time its very famous lyricist Gireesh Puthenchery. He has given lot of poetic beauties to Malayalam films. Gireesh Puthenchery has written lyrics for more than 400 film songs. Other than lyrics his works include the script for 3 films and story for one of the best comedy hits ever made, Meleparambil Aanveedu. His major hits were with Music directors Raveendran master and Vidyasaagar.
He has won state award for best lyricist, 7 times.

Today Mumbai govt. ensured smooth running of Shahrukh Khans new film, "My name is khan". For that Govt has canceled all leaves of policemen and ordered for extra security measures for all theater multiplexes for preventing Shivsena's protest. It's truly idiotic to say Mumbai is only for Marathis. But SRK's comments on inviting Pak players to IPL too was not needed as per the current political scenario. Anyways here is my cartoon based on the same situation.. How a normal Family will go to theater amidst tight security and protest :)

Two Thumbs Up for Jairam Ramesh..A great Decision indeed!!

Following a very tough opposition by environment lovers and scientists, an excellent decision has been made by Hon Minister for Environment, Mr.Jairam Ramesh. He refused to give a go-ahead for commercial production of BT Brinjal.

BT Brinjal is a genetically-modified vegetable which is infused with Cry1Ac gene from bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis to make the plant resistant to the fruit and shoot borers and certain pests.

Some scientists have been opposing it, arguing that the genes were toxic and would affect the health of the consumers.

Jairam Ramesh has also refused to give permission for Athirapilly Hydro-electric project. It's very evident that the total ecosystem will be deluged once the project comes up. Those who have been to this wonderful natural water-fall will never support this project. Last day he made one comment that, Athirapilly should be considered with same seriousness as that of Silent Valley. It's utter shameful and disgusting that Kerala Electricity Minister A.K.Balan commented on this decision as "decision without knowing things".

Blessed with mist covered tea-hills, wonderful landscapes, fresh water-falls, and one of the highest tea plantation in whole world, Munnar(also called Kashmir of Kerala) is begging for some nature-lovers intervention. But in current political system no one can save her unless Govt and judiciary come up with stringent measures against those land mafia and unending encroachment by big tycoons.

We can only say our opinions on these matter as nothing can be changed by just a common man's voice. And it's been a common phenomenon that those who raised their sound against these mafia, will be either manhandled or even killed. But if this situation continues, its for sure, next generation can only see Munnar through pictures and videos.

This is just another instance of politicians making common men just fools, again and again. Another important thing which i felt with the recent demolition of "buildings on encroached-land" is, it shouldn't be so brutally demolished. Instead Govt can take up the whole thing and convert it to some hotel or other purpose buildings. Just think how many natural resources had been used for constructing such beautiful and huge buildings. Now there is a situation where sand-mining has been prohibited from many rivers. The same sand was once used for the construction of these buildings. Anybody with some common-sense left cannot justify these demolition act. It's heart breaking to see such beautiful resorts and all being convert to useless piles of concrete waste.

National Geographic has already enlisted Munnar as one of the best tourist destination among 133 other in the whole planet! The beauty of this place is very famous internationally too. I would love to share some of my pictures of Munnar, which i took way back in 2007. It's been almost 3 years since i visited Munnar. I still recall those wonderful scenes and breath-taking beauty of landscapes. Being a strong nature-lover, i just can't bare this.. But sadly This is no more God's own country..Country led my damn politicians, Corrupted officials and some goons. A big sorry for the next generation for making this paradise to hell. A Big Sorry...

Sand storms covers Qatar

For the first time in my life, i have seen a real Sand Storm! Though not so big, a small sand storm covered Qatar today. I would love to share two pics here..Both are of same place, Al-corniche, which can be seen directly from my flat. First picture was taken yesterday, almost around same time. Second one shows how sand storm has reduced visibility. You can see the difference very clear!!. Those big buildings in the first pic has got completely disappeared in the second one, except one mosque minar.

Let me share some information about Sand storms. A dust storm or sandstorm is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front blows loose sand and dust from a dry surface. Particles are transported by saltation and suspension, causing soil erosion from one place and deposition in another. The Sahara and drylands around the Arabian peninsula are the main source of airborne dust, with some contributions from Iran, Pakistan and India into the Arabian Sea, and China's storms deposit dust in the Pacific. It has been argued that recently, poor management of the Earth's dry lands, such as neglecting the fallow system, are increasing dust storms from desert margins and changing both the local and global climate, and also impacting local economies.

One more great loss for Malayalam Film Industry

Noted Comedian actor Cochin Haneefa passed away today. He has been one of the best comedian who made his own style and slang in malayalam films. Spanning over 300 films, his style of delivering comedies were impeccable. Cochin Haneef has proved his director skills too with one of the best family stories malayalam has ever produced - 'Valsalyam', written by another veteran who left us last year, Lohithadas.

His role in the films "Kireedom","Punjabi House"etc got great appreciation among audience. He has handled some serious roles as well as negative roles too with ease. Other than Malayalam, he has acted in more than 80 tamil films. Kerala state appreciated him with 'Best supporting actor" award for his performance in the film Soothradharan, directed by Lohithadas.

May his soul rest in peace.

സംഗീതസ്നേഹിയായ ഏതൊരു മലയാളിയും ദിവസത്തില്‍ ഒരിക്കലെങ്കിലും കേള്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരേയൊരു സ്വരം. സന്തോഷത്തിലും, വിരഹത്തിലും, വേദനയിലും നമ്മെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ആ സ്വരം. മലയാളത്തിനെ ഗന്ധര്‍വഗായകന്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് സപ്തതിയുടെ നിറവ്.

ഈ മാന്ത്രിക ശബ്ദത്തിന്റെ അടിമകളാണ് ഓരോ മലയാളിയും അന്നും ഇന്നും എന്നും !!. തീയില്‍ കുരുത്താല്‍ വെയിലത്ത്‌ വാടില്ല എന്ന പോലെ ആണ് ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ജീവിതവും. തീര്‍ത്തും കഷ്ടപാടുകള്‍ നിറഞ്ഞ ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നും അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ കഠിനാധ്വാനം കൊണ്ട് കീഴടക്കിയത് മലയാളസിനിമലോകത്തിലെ അനിഷേധ്യ സ്ഥാനമാണ്.

1940 ജനുവരി 10 നു ഫോര്‍ട്ട്‌ കൊച്ചിയില്‍ ആണ് യേശുദാസ് ജനിച്ചത്. പിതാവായ അഗസ്റിന്‍ ജോസഫ്‌ അന്ന് തന്നെ അറിയപെടുന്ന ഒരു പാട്ടുകാരനും നടനും ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ആദ്യ ഗുരുവും. പിന്നീട് കുറച്ചു കാലം വെച്ചൂര്‍ ഹരിഹര സുബ്രമണ്യ അയ്യരുടെ കീഴിലും ശാസ്ത്രീയ സംഗീതം അഭ്യസിച്ചു. അത് കഴിഞ്ഞാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മഹാനായ ശ്രീ ചെമ്പൈ വൈദ്യനാഥ ഭാഗവതരുടെ ശിഷ്യന്‍ ആവുന്നത്. കുറച്ചു കാലം കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ചെമ്പൈയുടെ പ്രധാന ശിഷ്യന്‍ ആവുകയും ചെയ്തു. കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതത്തിനു പുറമേ അദ്ദേഹം ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനിയും അക്കാലത്തു അഭ്യസിച്ചു. ഒരു പരിധി വരെ കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതത്തിനെ സാധാരണ ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കിടയിലേയ്ക്ക് എത്തിച്ചതും യേശുദാസ് തന്നെയാണ്. ചെമ്പൈ സ്വാമികളുടെ ശൈലിയില്‍ നിന്നും വ്യതസ്തവും എന്നാല്‍ കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതം അത്ര പരിചിതമല്ലാത്തവരെ പോലും ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കച്ചേരികള്‍. എന്നെ കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതത്തിലേക്ക് ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചതും അദ്ദേഹം ആലപിച്ച "ക്ഷീരസാഗര" എന്ന ത്യാഗരാജ കീര്‍ത്തനം ആയിരുന്നു. അത് പോലെ ഊത്തുക്കാട് വെങ്കടസുബ്ബയരുടെ "അലൈപായുതേ കണ്ണാ", "തായേ യശോതെ" തുടങ്ങിയ കീര്‍ത്തനങ്ങളും യേശുദാസ് ആലപിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മറ്റാരിലും ഇല്ലാതെ എന്തോ ഒരു പ്രത്യേകത എനിക്കെപ്പോഴും തോന്നിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

മലയാളത്തില്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യ ചലച്ചിത്ര പിന്നണി ഗാനം 'കാല്‍പാടുകള്‍' എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ ശ്രീ നാരായണ ഗുരുവിന്റെ വരികളായ "ജാതിഭേദം മതദ്വേഷം ഇല്ലാതെ ഏവരും.." എന്നതാണ്. ആദ്യ ഗാനം തന്നെ അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ഉടനീളം തുടര്‍ന്ന് പോരുന്ന അതെ കാഴ്ചപാട് തന്നെ ആണെന്നതും തികച്ചും ശ്രദ്ധേയം ആണ്. പിന്നീടു 1973 ല്‍ "മനുഷ്യന്‍ മതങ്ങളെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു" എന്ന വയലാര്‍-ദേവരാജന്‍ കൂടുകെട്ടിന്റെ അതിമനോഹര ഗാനം പാടി ആദ്യ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡും അദ്ദേഹം സ്വന്തമാക്കി. അടുത്തിടെ അതേ ഗാനം ഒരു വേദിയില്‍ പാടി പൊട്ടികരഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം നമ്മോടു ചോദിച്ചതാണ് ..എന്തിനീ ജാതിയും മതവും? ആര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ടി നമ്മള്‍ തമ്മിലടിക്കണം?

മലയാളചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളിലെ സുവര്‍ണകാലം: വയലാര്‍-ദേവരാജന്‍-യേശുദാസ് കൂടുകെട്ടില്‍ പിറന്ന എല്ലാ ഗാനങ്ങളും നിത്യഹരിതമാണ്‌. 'സന്യാസിനി നിന്‍..', 'ചന്ദ്രകളഭം ചാര്‍ത്തിയുറങ്ങും..', 'ഇന്ദ്രവല്ലരി പൂ ചൂടി വരും..', 'ആയിരം പാദസരം കിലുങ്ങി.', 'ശക്തിമയം ശിവശക്തിമയം..', 'വെണ്ണ്‍ചന്ദ്രലഖയോരപ്സര സ്ത്രീ..' തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഗാനങ്ങള്‍. പിന്നീടു വയലാര്‍-ദേവരാജന്‍-യേശുദാസ് ഒരുക്കിയ "പദ്മ തീര്‍ഥമേ ഉണരൂ" എന്നാ ഗാനത്തിനും ദേശീയ അംഗീകാരം ലഭിച്ചു. വയലാറിന്റെ മനോഹര വരികളും, അത്ര തന്നെ മനോഹരവും ലളിതവുമായ ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഈണങ്ങളും ദാസേട്ടന്റെ സ്വരവും ചേര്‍ന്നപ്പോള്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചത് എക്കാലത്തെയും മികച്ച കുറെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ആണ്.
വയലാറിന്റെ കവിത തുളുമ്പുന്ന വരികളുടെ അര്‍ഥം അറിഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ഈണങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കിയപ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ വിചാരിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാള്‍ ഗംഭീരമായാണ് ഓരോ ഗാനവും ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയിരുന്നത്. "ചന്ദ്രകളഭം ചാര്‍ത്തിയുറങ്ങും.." എന്ന ഗാനം കേട്ടാല്‍ കേരളത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ പ്രകൃതി സൗന്ദര്യവും ചേര്‍ന്ന് നില്‍ക്കുന്ന ഒരു അനുഭൂതിയാണ് നല്ലൊരു ആസ്വാദകന് ലഭിക്കുക. അത് പോലെ കല്യാണി രാഗത്തില്‍ ചെയ്ത "സ്വര്‍ണചാമരം വീശിയെത്തുന്ന" എന്ന ഗാനം ദാസേട്ടനും, സുശീലാമ്മയും അത്ര മനോഹരമായാണ് പാടി അനശ്വരമാക്കിയത്.
തന്റെ അടിയുറച്ച ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ശൈലിയില്‍ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ സാധാരണക്കാരനും ആസ്വദിക്കാവുന്ന രീതിയില്‍ ഈണങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കുവാന്‍ ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞു എന്നതാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നേട്ടം. ഒരു പാട് കര്‍ണാട്ടിക് രാഗങ്ങള്‍ ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പി.ഭാസ്കരന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ എഴുതി ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ഈണം നല്‍കിയ "നാദബ്രഹ്മത്തിന്‍ സാഗരം നീന്തി വരും.." ദാസേട്ടന്റെ സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ഗാനങ്ങളിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ഒന്നാണ്.

തികഞ്ഞ ഒരു നിരീശ്വരവാദിയയിട്ടു കൂടി ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ആണ് മലയാളത്തിലെ ഒട്ടുമിക്ക ഭക്തിഗാനങ്ങളും ഒരുക്കിയെന്നതും ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്. കുമ്പകുടി കുളത്തൂര്‍ അയ്യര്‍ രചിച്ച വിശ്വപ്രസിദ്ധമായ "ഹരിവരാസനം വിശ്വമോഹനം.." എന്ന കീര്‍ത്തനതിനെ മധ്യമാവതി രാഗത്തില്‍ ഒരുക്കിയത് ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ആണ്. ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ശ്രുതിമധുരവും ഭക്തിപൂര്‍ണവുമായ ആലാപനം‌ കൊണ്ട് വളരെ പ്രശസ്തി നേടിയ ആ കീര്‍ത്തനം പിന്നീട് ശബരിമല അമ്പലത്തില്‍ അയ്യപ്പ സ്വാമിയുടെ ഉറക്കുപാട്ടായി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പോരുന്നു.

അത് പോലെ തന്നെ വയലാറിന്റെ "ശബരിമലയില്‍ തങ്ക സൂര്യോദയം.." എന്ന ഗാനവും വളരെ മനോഹരമായി ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ട്യൂണ്‍ ചെയ്തു. ആനന്ദഭൈരവിയുടെ മാധുര്യം ആ ഗാനത്തില്‍ വളരെ അധികം പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ ദേവരാജന്‍ മസ്റെര്‍ക്കും ദാസേട്ടനും കഴിഞു. ഏതൊക്കെ രാഗങ്ങള്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കണം എന്നതില്‍ ഏറ്റവും ഉത്തമ ഉദാഹരണങ്ങള്‍ ആണ് ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍. സാധാരണയായി ഭക്തിരസം/മംഗള ഭാവം എന്നിവയില്‍ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന രാഗമായ മധ്യമാവതിയില്‍ തന്നെ ശോകാര്‍ദ്ര ഗാനമായ "മംഗളം നേരുന്നു ഞാന്‍.." എന്നാ ഗാനവും ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ഒരുക്കിയത് ശ്രദ്ധേയമാണ്.പിന്നെയും ഒട്ടനവധി വിരഹഗാനങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ദാസേട്ടനെ കൊണ്ട് പാടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. "സുമംഗലീ നീ ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കുമോ..", "സന്യാസിനി നിന്‍.." തുടങ്ങിയവ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ ഉദാഹരണം. എം.ഡി രാജേന്ദ്രന്റെ വരികള്‍ക്ക് ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ഈണം നല്‍കി ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ "സുന്ദരീ.. നിന്‍ തുമ്പു കെട്ടിയിട്ട ചുരുള്‍മുടിയില്‍" എന്ന സൂപ്പര്‍ഹിറ്റ്‌ ഗാനം ഒരു കാലത്തെ കോളേജുകളില്‍ തരംഗം ആയിരുന്നു. ഒരു ഇടവേളയ്ക്കു ശേഷം തിരിച്ചു വന്നു മലയാളത്തിലെ മികച്ച പ്രണയ ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നായ "അരികില്‍ നീ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍" , കാവാലം നാരായണപണിക്കരുടെ "പുലരിതൂ മഞ്ഞുതുള്ളിയില്‍.." തുടങ്ങി മറ്റു പല ഹിറ്റ്‌ ഗാനങ്ങളും ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് നല്‍കി.
ദക്ഷിണാമൂര്‍ത്തി സ്വാമികളുടെ 'സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍+മെലടി' ശൈലിയില്‍ ഉള്ള അനവധി ഗംഭീര ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടി അനശ്വരമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കാട്ടിലെ പാഴ്മുളം..,ആലാപനം‌ ആലാപനം‌.., ഇന്നലെ നീയൊരു..., കനകസിംഹാസനത്തില്‍.. ,മനസ്സിലുണരു ഉഷസന്ധ്യയായി.., കാക്ക തമ്പുരാട്ടി.., ഹൃദയസരസ്സിലെ .., ചിത്രശിലാപാളികള്‍...,പുലയനാര്‍ മണിയമ്മ...,ദേവി ശ്രീദേവി..,ജനനി ജഗത് ജനനി. എന്നിങ്ങനെ അനവധി ഗാനങ്ങള്‍! കൂടുതലായി ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ശൈലിയില്‍ തന്നെ ഈണമിട്ട ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ആണ് ദക്ഷിണാമൂര്‍ത്തി സ്വാമികളുടെ പ്രത്യേകത.
ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി ഭാവങ്ങളില്‍ ഉള്ള ഒരു പിടി നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയത് എം.എസ്. ബാബുരാജ്- പി. ഭാസ്കരന്‍ ടീം ആണ്. കര്‍ണാടിക് രാഗമായ "ആഭേരിയുടെ' സമമായ ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി രാഗം "ഭീംപ്ലാസി" ഉപയോഗിച്ച് പി. ഭാസ്കരന്‍ മാഷുടെ ആര്‍ദ്ര മനോഹര വരികള്‍ക്ക് ബാബുക്ക ഈണം നല്‍കിയ ഒരു മനോഹര ഗാനമാണ് "താമസമെന്തേ വരുവാന്‍.. പ്രാണസഖി എന്റെ മുന്നില്‍ ". ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ആദ്യകാലത്തെ ഹിറ്റുകളില്‍ മുന്‍പിലാണ് ഈ ഗാനം. മറ്റൊരു ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി രാഗമായ "ദേശ്" ല്‍ ചെയ്ത "ഒരു പുഷ്പം മാത്രമെന്‍.." എന്ന ഗാനവും എക്കാലവും ഓര്‍മമിക്കപ്പെടും. പിന്നീട് "സിന്ധുഭൈരവി" രാഗത്തില്‍ മറ്റൊരു മനോഹര ഗാനവും ഈ കൂടുകെട്ടു തീര്‍ത്തു- "പ്രാണസഖി ഞാന്‍ വെറുമൊരു പാമരനാം പാട്ടുകാരന്‍..". മറ്റൊരു മനോഹര പ്രണയ ഗാനമാണ് "സുറുമയെഴുതിയ മിഴികളെ.." ഈ നാല് ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ എക്കാലത്തും എന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവയാണ്(എല്ലാ മലയാളികളുടെയും) . ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രസിദ്ധമായ യുഗ്മഗാനം(എസ്.ജാനകിയ്കൊപ്പം) "അകലെ അകലെ നീലാകാശം.." ബാബുക്കയുടെ സൃഷ്ടിയാണ്. ഓ.എന്‍.വി യുടെ അതിമനോഹര കവിതയായ "സൃഷ്ടി തന്‍ സൌന്ദര്യ.." ചിട്ടപെടുത്തി ദാസേട്ടന്‍ ആലപിച്ചതിനു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് മികച്ച ഗായകനുള്ള സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും ലഭിച്ചു.
എം.കെ.അര്‍ജുനന്‍ - ശ്രീകുമാരന്‍ തമ്പി കൂട്ടുകെട്ടില്‍ അനേകം ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടി അനശ്വരമാക്കിയിട്ടുന്ദ്. "പാടാത്ത വീണയും പാടും.." എന്ന ഗാനത്തില്‍ തുടങ്ങി ഒരുപാട് ഹിറ്റുകള്‍. ആ ഗാനത്തിലെ "മറക്കുകില്ലാ..മറക്കുകില്ലാ ഈ ഗാനം നമ്മള്‍ മറക്കുകില്ലാ.." എന്നാ ഭാഗം അത്രയും വികാരതീവ്രതയോടെ പാടാന്‍ ദാസേട്ടനല്ലാതെ ആര്‍ക്കും സാധിക്കില്ല. "കുയിലിന്റെ മണിനാദം കേട്ടൂ.." എന്ന ഗാനം നമ്മള്‍ കേട്ടത് ഗന്ധര്‍വസ്വരത്തിലൂടെ ആണെന്ന് മാത്രം! "തളിര്‍ വലയോ ..", "കസ്തൂരി മണക്കുന്നല്ലോ കാറ്റേ ..", "വാല്‍കണ്ണെഴുതി വനപുഷ്പ്പം..", "ഉഷസ്സാം സ്വര്‍ണ്ണതാമര.." തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്ക് ദാസേട്ടനിലൂടെ ലഭിച്ചു. പിന്നീടു കുറെ കാലത്തിനു ശേഷം "ചന്ദ്ര കിരണത്തിന്‍ ചന്ദന.." എന്ന മനോഹര ഗാനവും എം.കെ.അര്‍ജുനന്‍ ദാസേട്ടനായി ഒരുക്കി.
എം.ബി.ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍ എന്ന മഹാനായ സംഗീതസംവിധായകനും ദാസേട്ടന് ഒരുപാടു നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എനിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടപെട്ട ചിലതാണ് "ചൈത്രം ചായം ചാലിച്ചു..", "കൃഷ്ണതുളസികതിരുകള്‍ ചാര്‍ത്തിയ (ഏറ്റവും ഹൃദയഹാരിയായ ഒരു ദുഃഖ ഗാനം)..","നെറ്റിയില്‍ പൂവുള്ള..", "ശരദിന്തു മലര്‍ദീപ..","ഒരു വട്ടം കൂടിയെന്‍ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ മേയുന്ന.." അങ്ങനെ ഒരുപാട് ഗാനങ്ങള്‍. എം.ബി.ശ്രീനിവാസന്‍-ഓ.എന്‍-വി-ദാസേട്ടന്‍ കൂടുകെട്ട് സമ്മാനിച്ച ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ആര്‍ക്കും മറക്കാന്‍ പറ്റില്ല.
80' കളുടെ ആരംഭത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ മലയാള സിനിമയ്ക്കു സമ്മാനിച്ച ഒരു അതുല്യ പ്രതിഭയായിരുന്നു സംഗീതസംവിധായകന്‍ രവീന്ദ്രന്‍. ഒരു തുടക്കം കിട്ടാതെ വിഷമിച്ചിരുന്ന രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ക്ക് ആദ്യ അവസരം ഒരുക്കിയത് യേശുദാസ് ആണ് . സഹപാഠികള്‍ ആയിരുന്ന ഇരുവരും പിന്നീടു മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ പുതിയ ഒരു അധ്യായം എഴുതി ചേര്‍ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഒരു തരത്തില്‍ പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്റെ ശബ്ദത്തിനെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചതു രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ തന്നെ ആയിരുന്നു. അത് വരെ ചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ അധികം ആരും പരീക്ഷിക്കാതിരുന്ന 'മന്ത്രസ്ഥായി' ആയിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഗാനങ്ങളിലെ ആകര്‍ഷണം. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും ദാസേട്ടന്‍ അത് പാടുമ്പോള്‍ വല്ലാത്ത ഒരു അനുഭൂതിയാണ് ശ്രോതാവിനു ലഭിക്കുക. "ഒറ്റകമ്പി നാദം മാത്രം മൂളും..", "വിട തരൂ ഇന്നീ സായംസന്ധ്യയില്‍ ","ഹരിമുരളിരവം.." എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്റെ 'മന്ത്രസ്ഥായി' വൈഭവം എടുത്തു കാട്ടുന്നു. പ്രത്യേകിച്ചു എന്റെ കുട്ടികാലത്ത് ഞാന്‍ കേട്ട ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ അധികവും രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ആയിരുന്നതിനാല്‍ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക മമത ആ ഗാനങ്ങളോട് ഉണ്ടെന്നത് സമ്മതിക്കാതെ വയ്യ.
തീര്‍ത്തും കര്‍ണാടക സംഗീതത്തിലെ രാഗങ്ങളെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കി "രഘുവംശപതേ പരിപാലയമാം"(ശങ്കരാഭരണം) , "ശ്രീ വിനായകം"(ഹംസധ്വനി) തുടങ്ങി നിരവധി ഗാനങ്ങളാണ് രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് വേണ്ടി മാത്രം ഒരുക്കിയതാണ്‌ എന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം. സംഗീതത്തിന്റെ അര്‍ത്ഥതലങ്ങളെ കൈതപ്രം "ദേവ സഭാതലം " എന്ന ഗാനം രചിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ അത് ഹിന്ദോളം, തോടി,പന്തുവരാളി,മോഹനം, ശങ്കരാഭരണം,കല്യാണി, ചക്രവാകം,രേവതി എന്നിങ്ങനെ 8 രാഗങ്ങളില്‍ ദാസേട്ടനോടൊപ്പം ഒരു നാദവിസമയം തന്നെ തീര്‍ത്തു. മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രഗാനങ്ങളിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ഒരു 'രാഗമാലിക' അധിഷ്ടിത ഗാനം എന്റെ അഭിപ്രായത്തില്‍ ഇതു തന്നെ. ഇതേ ചിത്രത്തിലെ തന്നെ "പ്രമദവനം" ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഒന്നാണ്. ഈ ഗാനത്തിന്റെ ആലാപിലും "ദാസേട്ടന്‍ എഫ്ഫക്റ്റ്‌" നിറഞ്ഞു നില്‍ക്കുന്നു.
ഹിന്ദുസ്ഥാനി രാഗമായ "ബാഗേശ്രീ" ല്‍ രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍ തീര്‍ത്ത "ഇന്നുമെന്റെ കണ്ണുനീരില്‍.." എന്ന ഗാനം അത്ര ശോകഭാവത്തോടെ പാടാന്‍ ദാസേട്ടനല്ലാതെ ആര്‍ക്കു കഴിയും!
ശ്രീകുമാരന്‍ തമ്പി-രവീന്ദ്രന്‍-യേശുദാസ് കൂട്ടുകെട്ടില്‍ പിറന്ന ലളിതഗാനങ്ങള്‍ മലയാളികളുടെ ഓണസങ്കല്‍പ്പങ്ങളിലെ ഏറ്റവും മധുരമുള്ള ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ ആണ്. ആഭോഗി രാഗത്തിന്റെ സൌന്ദര്യം മുഴുവന്‍ ആവാഹിച്ച "മാമാങ്കം പലകുറി കൊണ്ടാടി നിളയുടെ.." പിന്നീട് മലയാളത്തിന്റെ മുഖമുദ്ര ആയി.
"എന്നും ചിരിക്കുന്ന സൂര്യന്റെ..", "ഉത്രടപൂനിലാവേ വാ", "പാതിരാമയക്കത്തില്‍", "പൂക്കളം കാണുന്ന", "മുടിപ്പൂക്കള്‍ വാടിയാല്‍" എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ മലയാളത്തിന്റെ സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു ഓണകാലത്തിന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മകള്‍ ആരിലും നിറയ്ക്കും. "തോണിക്കാരനും അവന്റെ പാട്ടും.." എന്ന ഗാനത്തിലെ "നിന്റെ കൂടെ പുലരുവോളം ഞാന്‍ കരയാം..പ്രണയവേദന അറിഞ്ഞവര്‍ക്കായി നാല് വരി പാടാം..കായലെ " എന്ന വരികള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയതു കേട്ടാല്‍ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന അനുഭവത്തെ എഴുതി അറിയിക്കുക പ്രായോഗികമല്ല!
ദേവരാജന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഗാനങ്ങളിലെ ലാളിത്യം അല്ല രവീന്ദ്രസംഗീതത്തില്‍ എനിക്ക് അനുഭവപെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. രവീന്ദ്രന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഗാനങ്ങളെ ശരിക്കും ഒരു മഴയോട് ഉപമിക്കാം. ഇടക്ക് ചാറ്റല്‍ മഴയാകും, ചിലപ്പോള്‍ അത് പെരുമഴയും. ഒരു ഗാനത്തില്‍ തന്നെ ഒരു പാട് ആരോഹണങ്ങളും അവരോഹണങ്ങളും നമുക്ക് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയും. (ശ്രീലതികകള്‍, ഏഴു സ്വരങ്ങളും, പ്രമദവനം, ഹരിമുരളിരവം തുടങ്ങിയ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ ഉദാഹരണം). യേശുദാസ് എന്ന ഗായകനിലെ എല്ലാ കഴിവുകളും മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിച്ചത് രവീന്ദ്രസംഗീതത്തിലൂടെ ആണെന്ന് നിസ്സംശയം പറയാം.
മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് മറക്കാനാവാത്ത അനവധി ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കിയ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടാണ് ദാസേട്ടന്‍-ജോണ്‍സന്‍ മാസ്റ്റര്‍. ഒരു ഗന്ധര്‍വന്റെ കഥ പറഞ്ഞ "ഞാന്‍ ഗന്ധര്‍വന്‍" ലെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ തന്നെ ഈ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ചത് ആയി ഞാന്‍ കരുതുന്നത്. ഗന്ധര്‍വന്റെ കഥയ്ക്ക് ഗന്ധര്‍വസ്വരം തന്നെ നല്‍കി ദാസേട്ടന്‍! "ദേവാങ്കണങ്ങള്‍ കയ്യൊഴിഞ്ഞ താരകം...", "ദേവീ ആത്മരാഗമേകാന്‍.." എന്നിങ്ങനെ അതിമനോഹര ഗാനങ്ങള്‍. "അനുരാഗിണി ഇതാ എന്‍..", "തുമ്പ പൂവില്‍ ഉണര്‍ന്നൂ വാസരം..","മെല്ലെ മെല്ലെ മുഖപടം.","മധുരം ജീവാമൃത ബിന്ദൂ..","ആദ്യമായി കണ്ടനാള്‍ ..", "ബ്രഹ്മകമലം ശ്രീലകമാക്കിയ..", "രാത്തിങ്കല്‍ പൂത്താലി..","പൂ വേണം പൂപ്പട വേണം.." "ദേവകന്യക സൂര്യതംബുരു.." തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഹിറ്റുകള്‍ ഇവര്‍ നമുക്ക് നല്‍കി. ജോണ്‍സന്‍ മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ഗാനങ്ങളിലെ ലാളിത്യം ആണ് എന്നെ ഏറ്റവും ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചത്. ദാസേട്ടന് വേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം മികച്ച ചില സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ഗാനങ്ങളും ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. വളരെ അപൂര്‍വമായി മാത്രം ചലച്ചിത്ര ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള "ലതംഗി" എന്ന രാഗത്തിലുള്ള 'പാദസ്മരണസുഖം ഗോപാലക.." എന്ന ഗാനം ആണ് എനിക്ക് ഏറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടമായിട്ടുള്ള സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ഗാനം. ദാസേട്ടനും-ചിത്രയും പാടിയ "പൊന്നില്‍ കുളിച്ചു നിന്നൂ.." മറ്റൊരു മനോഹര ഗാനമാണ്.
എം.ജി.രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് നല്‍കിയ ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ചില വിരഹഗാനങ്ങളാണ് എനിക്കേറ്റവും ഇഷ്ടം. "ഓ മൃദുലേ നിന്‍..", "പഴന്തമിഴ് പാട്ടിഴയും.." എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍. "ഒരു ദളം മാത്രം" എക്കാലത്തെയും നല്ല ഒരു മെലടി ആണ് . അടുത്തിടെ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ "തിര നുരയും ചുരുള്‍ മുടിയില്‍.." എന്ന ഗാനം വ്യതസ്തവും പുതുമയുള്ളതും ആണ്.
മറ്റൊരു മികച്ച സംഗീതസംവിധായകന്‍ ആണ് ശ്യാം. അദ്ദേഹവും ദാസേട്ടന് ഒരുപാട് നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ കൊടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചുനക്കര- ശ്യാം കൂട്ടുകെട്ട് ഒരു പിടി നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് സമ്മാനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് . ദേവതാരു പൂത്തു എന്‍ മനസ്സിന്‍.., കണ്ണാന്തളിയും കാട്ടുകുറിഞ്ഞിയും...., ഈ നീല രാവില്‍..,ഹൃദയം കൊണ്ടെഴുതുന്ന കവിത.. തുടങ്ങി ഒരു പിടി നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍.

ഒരു ഗാനരചയിതവേന്നതിനുപരി നല്ലൊരു സംഗീതസംവിധായകന്‍ കൂടിയാണ് കൈതപ്രം ദാമോദരന്‍ നമ്പൂതിരി. അദ്ദേഹം ചില മനോഹരമായ സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. "ഗോപാലികേ നീ കണ്ടുവോ..", "പാടാത്ത വൃന്ദാവനം..", "സിന്ദൂര തിലക.."( ഷന്‍മുഖപ്രിയ രാഗത്തില്‍ ചിട്ടപെടുത്തിയ ഈ ഗാനം കേട്ടാല്‍ മൂകാംബികയില്‍ ചെന്ന ഒരു അനുഭവമാണ് എപ്പോഴും എനിക്ക് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്.. മൂകാംബികയില്‍ പ്രദക്ഷിണ സമയത്ത് ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരുന്ന ചില നാദങ്ങള്‍ ഈ ഗാനത്തില്‍ വളരെ മനോഹരമായി ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്‌)
"കളിവീടുറങ്ങിയല്ലോ..","എന്നോടെന്തിനീ പിണക്കം..","മറക്കുമോ നീയെന്റെ..","വലംപിരി ശംഘില്‍..","വണ്ണാത്തി പുഴയുടെ.." എന്നിവ ദാസേട്ടന്‍-കൈതപ്രം ടീമിന്റെ നല്ല ചില ഗാനങ്ങളാണ്.
മോഹന്‍ സിതാര ദാസേട്ടന് നല്‍കിയ ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ എന്റെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടത് ചിത്രയോടൊപ്പം പാടിയ "ശിവദം ശിവ നാമം.." എന്ന ഗാനമാണ്. മറ്റു ചില നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങളായി എന്നിക്ക് തോന്നിയിട്ടുള്ളത് ഇവയാണ്.."സഹ്യസാനു ശ്രുതി ചേര്‍ത്ത് വെച്ച..", 'രാവിന്‍ നില കായല്‍..", "നിന്റെ കണ്ണില്‍ വിരുന്നു വന്നൂ..", "ധ്വനി തരംഗ തരളം..", "ആലില കണ്ണാ നിന്റെ.."
ഔസേപ്പച്ചന്‍-ദാസേട്ടന്‍ കൂട്ടുകെട്ടിലും കുറച്ചു നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് ലഭിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ദാസേട്ടന് ദേശിയ അവാര്‍ഡ്‌ നേടികൊടുത്ത "ഉണ്ണികളേ ഒരു കഥ പറയാം" എന്ന ഗാനം, "സ്വാഗതം ഓതുമീ..","നീ എന്‍ സര്‍ഗ സൌന്ദര്യമേ..","രാപ്പാടി കേഴുന്നുവോ..", "ഓ പ്രിയേ..", "എന്നും നിന്നെ പൂജിക്കാം" തുടങ്ങി ഒരു പിടി നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ !

പുതുമുഖ സംഗീത സംവിധായകരില്‍ എം.ജയചന്ദ്രന്‍ ആണ് ദാസേട്ടന് നല്ല പാട്ടുകള്‍ നല്‍കിയവരില്‍ ശ്രദ്ധേയന്‍. "ഇന്നലെ എന്റെ.." എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ശോകഗാനം തന്നെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ചത്. പിന്നെ തന്റെ 69 വയസ്സിലും ശബ്ദഗാംഭീര്യം പോവാതെ പാടുവാന്‍ പറ്റും എന്ന് "അമ്മ മഴക്കാറിനും കണ്ണ്‍ നിറഞ്ഞു .." എന്ന ഗാനത്തിലൂടെ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ തെളിയിച്ചു. ഈ ഗാനത്തില്‍ പോലും ദാസേട്ടന് മാത്രം പറ്റുന്ന ചില സംഗതികള്‍ ഉണ്ട്. അത് പാടാന്‍ ഇന്നും എന്നും ഒരേയൊരു യേശുദാസ് മാത്രം!

അന്യഭാഷാ സംഗീതസംവിധായകരില്‍ പ്രമുഘരായ ബോംബെ രവി, രവീന്ദ്ര ജെയിന്‍, നൌഷാദ്, എം.എസ്.വിശ്വനാഥന്‍, സലില്‍ ചൌധരി, ഇളയരാജ,വിദ്യാസാഗര്‍ എന്നിവരും ചില മനോഹര ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന് വേണ്ടി ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
തമിഴ് സിനിമയിലെ അഗ്രഗണ്യനായ എം.എസ്.വിശ്വനാഥന്റെ "ഈശ്വരനൊരിക്കല്‍ വിരുന്നിനു പോയി..", "സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗ നന്ദിനി .." എന്ന ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ആണ് ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയതില്‍ എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമുള്ളത്. സലില്‍ ചൌധരി തീര്‍ത്തും വ്യതസ്തമായ ഒരു രീതിയാണ്‌ പിന്തുടര്‍ന്ന് വന്നിട്ടുള്ളത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ "കടലിനക്കരെ പോണോരെ .."എന്ന ഗാനം ഒരു കാലത്ത് വിദേശങ്ങളില്‍ പോലും പരിചിതമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീടു "കാതില്‍ തേന്‍ മഴയായി.." എന്ന അതിമനോഹരമായ മെലടി ദാസേട്ടന് നല്‍കിയാണ്‌ അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ഇടവേളയ്ക്കു ശേഷം മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ വന്നത്. ഹിന്ദിചലച്ചിത്രലോകത്തിലെ പ്രമുഘരായ ബോംബെ രവി, നൌഷാദ് എന്നിവരും ദാസേട്ടനിലൂടെ മലയാളികള്‍ക്ക് ചില അനശ്വര ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
"ധ്വനി" എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ "മാനസനിളയില്‍ ..","അനുരാഗലോല ഗാത്രി.."(ഈ ഗാനം നൌഷാദ് ഈണം ഇട്ടു മൊഹമ്മദ്‌ റാഫി പാടിയ "ജിസ് രാത് കെ ക്വാബ് ആയെ.." എന്നതിന്റെ മലയാള പരിഭാഷയാണ്)
തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാ ഗാനങ്ങളും ഹിറ്റുകളാണ്.
ബോംബെ രവി സംഗീതസംവിധാനം നിര്‍വഹിച്ച ദാസേട്ടന്റെ എല്ലാ ഗാനങ്ങളും എന്റെ പ്രിയപെട്ടവയാണ്. 'സര്‍ഗം' എന്ന ചലച്ചിത്രം സെമി-ക്ലാസിക്കല്‍ ശൈലിയില്‍ ഉള്ള ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് എന്നും ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കപ്പെടും. ദാസേട്ടന്‍ ആലപിച്ച "സംഗീതമേ അമരസല്ലപമേ..", "സ്വരരാഗഗംഗ പ്രവാഹമേ..", "കണ്ണാടിയില്‍ ആദ്യമായെന്‍.." തുടങ്ങി എല്ലാ ഗാനങ്ങളും വളരെ മികച്ചതാണ്. "നഖക്ഷതങ്ങള്‍", "പരിണയം" തുടങ്ങിയ ചിത്രങ്ങളിലെ അതിമനോഹരമായ മെലഡികള്‍ വിസ്മരിക്കുവാന്‍ വയ്യ. "നീരാടുവാന്‍ നിലയില്‍ നീരാടുവാന്‍.." എന്ന ഗാനത്തിന്റെ 'ആലാപ്' ദാസേട്ടനോളം മധുരമായി പാടുവാന്‍ ആര്‍ക്കു കഴിയും?
രവീന്ദ്ര ജെയിന്‍ ആണ് ദാസേട്ടനെ ദേശീയ അവാര്‍ഡിന് അര്‍ഹനാക്കിയ "ഗോരി തേരാ ഗാവ്" സംഗീതം നല്‍കിയത്. "ചിറ്റ് ചോഹ്ര്‍ " എന്ന ചിത്രത്തിലെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ പാടി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം വികാരാധീനനായി പറഞ്ഞത് ഇങ്ങനെ ആയിരുന്നത്രെ- "അന്ധനായ എനിക്ക് കാഴ്ച ലഭിച്ചാല്‍ എനിക്ക് ആദ്യം ദാസിനെ തന്നെ കാണണം". ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ "ചാന്ദ് അകേല.." അതിസുന്ദരമായ ഒരു പ്രണയഗാനമാണ്. അത് പോലെ യെമന്‍ രാഗത്തിലുള്ള "ജബ് ദീപ് ജലേ ആനാ..", "ആ ആ രേ മിറ്വ..." തുടങ്ങി അദ്ദേഹം ഹിന്ദിയില്‍ തൊട്ടതെല്ലാം പൊന്നാക്കി.
ഇളയരാജ-ദാസേട്ടന്‍ കൂട്ടുകെട്ട് തമിഴിലും അനവധി ഹിറ്റുകള്‍ സമ്മാനിച്ചിരുന്നു. ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച താരാട്ട് ഗാനമാണ് "കണ്ണേ കളെ മാനെ..".
"പൂവേ സെമ്പൂവേ..", "ഏതോ നിലൈവുകള്‍..", "വാ വാ അന്പേ..", "എന്‍ ജീവന്‍ പടെയ്തു.." തുടങ്ങി അനവധി ഹിറ്റുകള്‍ തമിഴിലും ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടി.
വിദ്യാസാഗറിന്റെ, ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയ ചില ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപെട്ടതായി ഉണ്ട്. "ആരോ വിരല്‍ മീട്ടീ..", "ഒരു രാത്രി കൂടി വിട വാങ്ങവേ..", "പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും ആരോ കിനാവിന്റെ..", "മിഴിയറിയാതെ വന്നു നീ..", "കരളേ നിന്‍ കൈ പിടിച്ചാല്‍.." എന്നീ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ ദാസേട്ടന്‍ തന്റെ മധ്യവസസ്സിലും വളരെ ശ്രുതിമധുരമായാണ് ആലപിച്ചത് എന്നാ കാര്യം പറയാതെ വയ്യ.
ആര്‍.കെ.ശേഖര്‍- ദാസേട്ടന്‍ കൂടുകെട്ടിലും കുറച്ചു നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്ക് ലഭിക്കയുണ്ടായി. ചോറ്റാനിക്കര അമ്മ എന്നാ ചിത്രത്തിലെ ദാസേട്ടനും സുശീലാമ്മയും പാടിയ "മനസ്സ് മനസ്സിന്റെ.." എന്ന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന മനോഹര യുഗ്മ ഗാനം മറക്കുക വയ്യ.

അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകനും ലോകപ്രശസ്തനുമായ എ.ആര്‍.റെഹ്മാന്‍ ആകെ ഒരു ചിത്രത്തിലെ മലയാളത്തില്‍ സംഗീതസംവിധാനം ചെയ്തുള്ളൂ. അതിലും ദാസേട്ടന്‍ വളരെ ജനപ്രിയമായ 2 ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ പാടിയിരുന്നു. റെഹ്മാന്‍ പിന്നീടു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.."ഈ ഭൂമിയില്‍ ഉള്ള ഏറ്റവും മനോഹരമായ ഒരു ശബ്ദം ദാസേട്ടന്റെ തന്നെ!"
ഭക്തി ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ എടുത്താലും ദാസേട്ടനെ കൂടാതെ ഒന്നും ഇല്ലെന്നു തന്നെ പറയാം. എന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ഗാനമാണ് ദ്വിജാവന്തി രാഗത്തില്‍ ഉള്ള "ഒരു നേരമെങ്കിലും കാണാതെ വയ്യ.." എന്ന ഭക്തിഗാനം. തുളസിതീര്‍ത്ഥം എന്ന ആല്‍ബത്തിലെ എല്ലാ ഗാനങ്ങളും ഒന്നിനൊന്നു മികച്ചതാണ്. പിന്നീടു "മയില്‍‌പീലി", "ഗംഗയാര്‍" എന്നിങ്ങനെ എത്രയോ നല്ല ഗാനങ്ങള്‍.

കഷ്മിരിയും ആസാമിയും ഒഴികെ ഉള്ള എല്ലാ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ഭാഷകളിലും ദാസേട്ടന്‍ പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഏഴു തവണ ദേശിയ അവാര്‍ഡും, 22 തവണ കേരള സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും, 8 തവണ തമിഴ്നാട് സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും, 5 തവണ കര്‍ണാടക സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും, 6 തവണ ആന്ധ്ര സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും, ഒരു തവണ ബംഗാള്‍ സംസ്ഥാന അവാര്‍ഡും അദ്ദേഹം സ്വന്തമാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. 1975 ല്‍ പദ്മശ്രീ, 2002 ല്‍ പദ്മഭൂഷന്‍ എന്നീ പുരസ്കാരം നല്‍കി ഇന്ത്യ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ആദരിച്ചു. ഇതു വരെ 44 ,000 ല്‍ അധികം സിനിമ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം പാടിയിട്ടുമുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഭക്ക് മുന്നില്‍ അതുല്യം എന്ന വാക്കും ഇവിടെ അപ്രസക്തമാണ്.

ദാസേട്ടനെ പറ്റി പറയാന്‍ ഞാന്‍ ആളല്ലെങ്കിലും എനിക്ക് ചെറിയ ഒരു കാര്യത്തില്‍ മാത്രം ഒരു അഭിപ്രായവ്യതാസമുണ്ട്. അദ്ദേഹം ചില ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ "ഹ" എന്നുള്ളതിന് പകരം "ഗ" എന്ന് പാടി ഞാന്‍ ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പണ്ടുള്ള ഗാനങ്ങളില്‍ ഇതു അനുഭവപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ല താനും. മോഹനം എന്നുള്ളത് പല ഗാനങ്ങളിലും "മോഗനം" എന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഞാന്‍ ഇതിനെ പറ്റി പലരോടും ചോദിച്ചെങ്കിലും ശരിയായ ഒരു ഉത്തരം ഇതു വരെ ലഭിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. ആരോ ഒരാള്‍ പറഞ്ഞതായി ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നു, ആ പ്രയോഗം "ഹ" എന്നുള്ളതിനെ നേര്‍പ്പിച്ചു പാടുവാന്‍ ആയിരിക്കാം എന്നതായിരുന്നു. എന്തോ എനിക്കതിനോട് യോജിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റിയില്ല. അങ്ങനെ ആണെങ്കില്‍ എന്ത് കൊണ്ട് പഴയ പാട്ടുകളില്‍ അങ്ങനെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല എന്നതും ഒരു ചോദ്യമായി നില്‍ക്കുന്നു. എനിക്ക് അതിനെ പറ്റി പറയാന്‍ ആധികാരികമായ അറിവില്ല.

എന്റെ ആഗ്രഹം അദ്ദേഹം ഇനി കൂടുതല്‍ കച്ചേരികള്‍ ചെയ്യണം എന്നതാണ്.അദ്ദേഹം അടുത്തിടെ ആലപിച്ച 'ചോക്ലേറ്റ് പുഴയും ഐസ്ക്രീം മലയും' എന്നോ മറ്റുള്ള ഒരു ഗാനം നിര്‍ഭാഗ്യവശാല്‍ കേള്‍ക്കാനിടയായി. പക്ഷെ ആ ദുഃഖം അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ "ശിവ ഗംഗേ ശിലാ ഗംഗേ" എന്നാ ഗാനം(ബനാറസ്‌) കേട്ടപ്പോള്‍ പോവുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാലും അര്‍ത്ഥശൂന്യമായ ചലച്ചിത്രഗാനങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നതാണ് ശ്രോതക്കള്‍ക്കും ഇഷ്ടം എന്ന് ഞാന്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
ഈയടുത്ത് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഒരു അഭിമുഖത്തില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം അടുത്തിടെ പഠിച്ചെടുത്ത ഒരു രാഗത്തില്‍ ഒരു കച്ചേരി നടത്തിയതിനെ പറ്റി പറയുകയുണ്ടായി. എത്ര പഠിച്ചാലും അത്ര തന്നെ കൂടി വരുന്ന സംഗീതത്തിന്റെ ആഴം അദ്ദേഹത്തിനറിയാം..പക്ഷെ രണ്ടു പാട്ട് പാടുമ്പോഴേക്കും 'സ്റ്റാര്‍' ആകുന്ന ഗായകര്‍ മാത്രം അത് മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നില്ല.. അതാണ് അദ്ദേഹവും മറ്റുള്ളവരും തമ്മിലുള്ള വ്യത്യാസവും!
ഇനിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ആരോഗ്യവും ആയുസ്സും ശബ്ദസുഖവും ദൈവം കൊടുക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് മാത്രം പ്രാര്‍ഥിക്കുന്നു.

Kamas - A Beautiful raga !

"Ranjayathi manamseethi raga", Raga is what cheers mind. According to Sangeetha-Ratnakara of Sharngadeva (13th century), Raga is "A combination of tones which, with beautiful illuminating graces, inclination, declination and pleases the people in general".

Same is the case with this raga, Kamas(kamasu). It is said that if you repeat the word 'kamasu' it will end up as 'sukama'(pleasure). So true it is!

Kamas is a janya raga of 28th Melakartha raga- Harikambhoji. Kamas is considered as a sarvakalika raga(all-time). This raga conveys "shringara" rasa very well. Almost all great composers have used this raga in their krithis.

Kamas raga has become my favourite right after i heard a beautiful daru varnam, "Mathey Malayadwaja..", praising Madurai Meenakshy Devi. Let me share some information which i compiled about this soulful composition by Harikeshanellur Muthayya Bagawathar.

Daru varnam is a form of varnam where mukthayi swaras will be followed by Jathis and finally Sahitya. Perhaps the use of Mukthayi swaras would be the most catchy thing that i felt in this varnam. I'm including that Daru varnam here

The most beautiful rendering of this daru varnam i have heard is of M.S.Subbalakshmi amma's. What a divine voice! She will just create that tranquil mood from nowhere. I also love Sudha Raghunathan's version from the film 'Morning Raga' which is a bit fusion kind.

Many famous composers have used 'kamas' in their krithis. Swathi Thirunals varnam "sa vama rusha", Chinnikrishnadasar's swarajathi "Saambashivayaneva", Tyagarajas "Sujanajeevana", Dikshither's "Saarasadalanayana", Mysore Vasudevacharya's "Brochevaravarua", Pattanam Subramanya Iyyer's javali "Apudumanasu' etc are some gems set to this beautiful raga.

Kamas has been used in film songs too. Ilayaraja-KJ Yesudas teams famous song "Pazhamuthir cholai" , Devarajan master-ONV kurup teams "maayanadana viharini" etc are some very famous film songs based on 'kamas' raga.

The Roman Emperor Nero said to have played the fiddle while Rome burned. When i heard the news conference of Kerala's Food and Civil supplies minister, Mr. C.Divakaran, story of Nero came to my mind. Food price has been sky rocketing these days and its has become a common-man's deal alone. Minister said that People have enough money with them and that's why hotels are full !. The same minister once commented that people must get rid the habit of eating rice; and opt chicken/egg. It's high time for us to think twice before electing such people.

Here I tried to illustrate the same feeling. He's playing the instrument like Nero as common people are striving for each days meal(Romes fire, i have symbolized to food price).

Last day i read one news...Cochin corporation has been awarded by Central Government for being the "Bin Less" City. I was really flabbergasted to be honest! I had been to Cochin(മല്ലു ഭാഷയില്‍ കൌചി) :) 2 months back and almost all the places were just dumped with plastic covers and garbage waste. Really sad to see such scenes in a state which is known as "Gods's own country", even though its becoming goonda's own country [:P]. If you happen to travel from Cochin airport to Cochin city, once u reach kalamassery area the "bin-less" city's smell will 'enthrall' your senses. Take my word!

Here i just give a try to illustrate the same scenario. A guy(NRI needless to say) is returning to his home land after a long time and as he reach the same place he realize he is on his home land :). New-Generation 'Guys n Gals' are not tensed about anything else except making phone calls...ജീവിതം സെക്കന്റ്‌ വെച്ച് മാറുമ്പോള്‍ എന്തിനു ടെന്‍ഷന്‍ !

Miyan Ki Thodi. This raga captivated my mind a few months back. I came across one spell bound rendition of this Raga on violin by Padmashree, Padmabhooshan Smt. N Rajam. Miyan ki thodi is a soulful morning raga.

Well, a bit history about this raga...This raga is a master piece creation of Miyan Tansen, creator of many more extra ordinary ragas like Miyan ki malhar, Darbari kanada, Rageshwari, Miyan ki sarang..

Miyan Tansen or Ramtanu Pandey (1493 or 1506 – 1586 or 1589) is considered among the greatest composer-musicians in Hindustani classical music. He was an extraordinarily gifted vocalist, known for a large number of compositions, and also an instrumentalist who popularized and improved the rabab (of Central Asian origin). He was among the Navaratnas (nine jewels) at the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar gave him the title Miyan (an honorific, meaning learned man).

Smt. N Rajam plays this raga at Benaras university, on the banks of river Ganga. Chirping sounds of birds, Morning raga's freshness, blissful tabla..everthing makes this video a complete mind blowing one!

മുംബൈ ആക്രമണം നടന്നിട്ട് ഒരു വര്‍ഷം പിന്നിടുന്നു...എല്ലാ ദുരന്തങ്ങളെയും പോലെ ഇതിലും നിസ്സംഗത മാത്രം ബാക്കി.. പരസ്പരം പഴി ചാരി രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാര്‍ സഭകളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങി പോകും. അര്‍ഹതപെട്ടവര്‍ക്ക് ധന സഹായം പോലും നല്‍കാത്ത അവസരത്തില്‍ , ഈ ദുരന്തത്തിന് കാരണകാരനായ ഒരുവന്‍ 33 കോടിയില്‍ പരം രൂപ ചെലവില്‍ ഹി-ടെക് "ജയിലിലും" അടിച്ചു പൊളിക്കുന്നു !!

This time its all about politics and kinda poli'trics'. CPM, the ruling party in Kerala and West Bengal met with a huge defeat in this bi-election. This party was in news for its infamous decision making against popular Chief Minister from kerala, VS Achuthanandan. Polit bureau aka PB, the top committee of CPM made some disgusting decisions against VS which even provoked a hard core CPM follower in Kerala. CPM secretary(Kerala) Mr,. Pinarayi Vijayan was allegedly included in a case related to Lavlin and it made lot of controversies in Kerala recent days. All above the UDF candidate in Kannur was Mr.Abdullakutti who joined UDF recently after getting fired from CPM itself ! After all when the results came it was Mr.Abdullakutty who scored a major lead and won the seat.
This cartoon depicts the shock of CPM top leaders after hearing the news that CPM lost in their major state, West Bengal too. In the backdrop Mr. Abdullakutty and his close follower Mr.Sudhakaran(UDF) enjoying the win with other party followers.
Actually i don't support any political party. I do like some leaders irrespective of their party. So this caricature doesn't aim any particular person or party in any means. All my friends would take this in the right manner, i believe! As always your comments will keep me going!!

How FLASH news are born...

My sincere thanks to one mail circulated over internet, which humorously explained how jack and jill's rhyme can be reported by Indian News channels.

Well, I got the real inspiration from that mail. Then i thought about how it would be reported by any mallu channels which are very famous for making a 'small' news into some thing which is really drastic. :) Nowadays its been more evident that crime news or some accident news will be the main news for any Newspaper or news channels. That news will remain as "Flash/ breaking" news for 2-3 days. Some news channels will do some sort of Investigative Journalism or similar stuffs as well. If carried out in the right way, Investigative journalism will outsmart all the other aspects of modern news channels. But that is being used as a medium for "making" news rather than reporting news.

Here i'm just trying to illustrate how a famous mallu channel will report it!! Comments are always welcome, be good or bad.. :)

Some thoughts on NOBEL prize

I was so surprised to see the news that Nobel prize for peace 2009 goes to Mr.Obama. Even though i really love his charisma and attitude, i really doubt he has done something for getting such a high honor, which was even deserted to the real propagator of peace, Mohandas karamchand Gandhi aka Mahatma Gandhi. Well, this might be a controversial topic. So i'm not commenting on this.

Here is a small attempt on depicting my feel on this :) all comments are welcome and i hope all will take this in right sense.

Despite the charm of Onam season, Kerala has been flooded with some goonda news and other health concerns related to H1N! fever and atlast unexpected heavy rain.. This caricature is a simple attempt to showcase some thoughts came to my mind when i thought of maveli visiting Kerala!!

I wish all Keralites a Happy and Prosperous onam(without liquor)..hee hee
